Manchester Women Watford

Senior Women Watford 2015

After the Comets exploits last week this weekend saw the Manchester women team travel down to Watford for the opening fixtures of Division 1. This year sees a number of new faces in the team with Annie Clapperton, Steph Whittaker, Emmie-Rose Eastwood, Lucy Thomas, Anna Lord and Becca Lee all making their senior debuts. With a couple of players unavailable and a large number of juniors joining the team the weekend was faced with some trepidation but the whole team responded in fine style to take maximum points and leave Manchester sitting in 2nd place behind last years winners Liverpool. The opening game on the Saturday was against Leeds and the win was never in real doubt with Manchester starting well to build a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and eventually winning the match 13-4 (4-0,2-2,4-0,3-2). With most of the players getting at least one goal it was a great start and meant the players went into the second day full of confidence.Sunday saw an early start with an 8.30am start vs Otter. This was a close game but with E Bartlett in fine scoring form with 7 goals and J Smith producing some amazing saves to keep Otter out Manchester pulled back a 2 goal deficit to lead 8-5 mid way in the third. However Otter started to claw back and scored at the start of the 4th quarter to make it 8-7. With E Chadderton and R Egan both picking up 3 majors the final minutes was tense and with Otter missing a good chance to equalize right at the end after going man up Manchester held out to win 9-8 (1-2,4-2,3-2,1-2) and inflict Otter's first of two defeats of the weekend. The second game on the Sunday was vs Sheffield Sharks and after the tough earlier game Manchester struggled to get going with the players clearly still feeling the effects. However, from a slender lead of 5-4 at half time they started to extend their lead in the 3rd and 4th to finish the match 12-7 winners (2-1,3-3,3-1,4-2).Overall a great weekend for Manchester which puts them in a great position to make the Super 5s. The mixture of new and existing players worked well with goals spread right throughout the squad. The next round is in Grantham on the 10th & 11th October with matches against Coventry and Caledonia.Stats from weekend, Goals and ExclusionsJ Smith 0 (0-0-0) 0 (0-0-0)L Thomas 4 (2-0-2) 0 (0-0-0)R Egan 1 (1-0-0) 6 (0-3-3)S Whittaker 3 (1-0-2) 0 (0-0-0)E Chadderton 2 (1-0-1) 6 (2-3-1)E Bartlett 9 (1-7-1) 1 (1-0-0)A Clapperton 7 (3-1-3) 2 (0-0-2)E Eastwood 0 (0-0-0) 3 (0-0-3)V Hawkins 4 (2-0-2) 3 (2-1-0)A Lord 2 (1-1-0) 0 (0-0-0)E Lee 2 (1-0-1) 1(1-0-0)M Gaunt 0 (0-0-0) 0 (0-0-0)
