Comets In Watford V Liverpool Liver Birds and Birmingham
The Comets felt the full extremes of emotions in a tension filled weekend in Watford at the start of the Championship 2 Phase 2 matches with a victory and defeat by the narrowest margins of a single goal.On the Saturday they faced Liverpool Liver Birds (who the Comets had lost 8-2 on the opening fixture of Phase 1) and so this promised to be an indication of the progress made by the squad this season. In a low scoring match both defences were hard to break down and neither side were taking full advantage of their oppotunities. At the end of the third the score was only 2-2, thanks to a couple of goals from Maisy, and when Anna scored half way through the 4th for the Comets, to take the lead for the first time, it looked like it was going to be enough for the win. However, in the space of 17 seconds Liverpool scored twice to retake the lead despite the best efforts of the players, they couldn't get the equalizer and the score remained 4-3 to Liverpool (1-0,1-1,0-1,2-1). A cruel blow to the squad, but showed a massive improvement since the start of the season.
With the loss to Liverpool the Comets really needed a win against Birmingham on the Sunday to have any chance of making the playoffs for Division 2. It started badly with Birmingham building a 1-3 lead by the 2nd quarter and a number of Comets receiving multiple majors in a effort to stop them. Eventually the Comets started to get back into the match with Roisin scoring to make it 2-3 before picking up her third major to rule her out for the rest of the game. However the Comets kept going and with goals by Bethan and Izzy they eventually took the lead 5-4 at the end of the 3rd with another goal by Izzy. When half way through the 4th Izzy scored again to make the score 7-4 and take her personal tally for the game to 5 it looked like the game was all but over. However Birmingham scored twice more to leave a tense last 30 seconds before the buzzer went with the Comets winning 7-6. The next round is in Leeds on the 10th & 11th January with matches against Sunderland and Polytechnic who have emerged as the nearest contender to the Comets for the final playoff place.
